Although this blog is created not long ago, I am trying to remember all that we learnt at RSP. So, first off, I think I will start with the field trip to the Burmese, Thai and Filipino enclave in Singapore!
These are some short prior research with regards to the enclaves.
Peninsula plaza:
Peninsula plaza aka Burma mall is located in the Cityhall district. It caters to a lowly labourer or homesick student seekin out a bowl of moh hin gha(fish and noodle soup)
Goden Mile complex:
Golden Mile complex is a building on Beach road in Kallang. It was previously known as Woh Hupcomplex. Now, it contains many Thai shops and eateries, as well as tourist and ticketing agencies for tourists going to Malaysia via bus or coach.
Lucky Plaza:
Extraodinarily, this enclave is so close to our school, RGS! It is located opposite Orchard MRT station making it very convenient to go. There are many shops selling Filipino products, electronics, sports goods and shoes. It appears to be the hub for the Filipino community in Singapore, especially for the domestic workers to congregate in.
So there is what I have found out on the shopping malls. Of course I have not forgotten about the Burmese Buddhist temple in Singapore!
Burmese Buddhist temple:
Located at Tai Gin Road, Novena, what you will definitely remember about it is the largest pure white marble statue outside of Myanmar! This temple is also the only one of its kind in Singapore. U Kway Gaung the founder of the temple had the ambition to introduce Theravada Buddhism in Singapore. He eventually managed to ship the white marble Buddha to Singapore despite limited funds, lack of modern transportation and heavy machinery. Although the temple was not originally located here, there have always been a strong Buddhist presence around the area; many streets connecting Balastier Road is named after cities and places in Myanmar such as: Mandalay, a royal capital from 1860.
